Foraging Otter: Sea birds, harbor seals, and their pups on the beach

Wildlife are easy to view without disturbing their vital biological needs.

Sea Birds and Harbor Seals are sensitive to disturbance.

Most young wildlife that are alone, "are not abandoned".

Most wildlife mothers need to leave their young each day to eat.

Most abandonment by mothers are caused by humans and dogs.

Please do not disturb and help us report sick, dead, or abandoned wildlife.

Humans and especially their pets" can catch some illnesses.

Do not approach wildlife or enter their feces prone resting areas.

Sharing photos of them and their location is the best way to help us report.

Estuary Outlook:

10 day Daily-Forecast is below this overview:

June into July: Periods of late Spring to Early Summer wind (From NW), in between periods of calm continue. Fully calm days tend to cycle into periods of afternoon wind with an occasion full day blow out, prior to cycling back to calm. Calm periods gradually become more frequent, and the norm, as we move deeper into July. Chances of rain become rare. Check our daily forecasts below prior to launching. We close for obvious unsafe conditions.

The American and European weather forecast models are not always in agreement and may shift somewhat almost daily. No single forecast covers all aspects well. We compare four. Forecasts change and are generally close to accurate for two to three days. We share what they mean for our location.

Wind Warnings: It is vital to understand the conditions for the day you plan to go. It is "not" uncommon for paddlers planning downstream trips from Monte Rio or Willow Creek to Jenner,  to become stranded by high winds, if they don't check "our" forecast prior to departure. The wind blows and pushes paddlers back upstream and a mainstream river current below Monte Rio will not offset strong  winds. You may need to cancel paddling and change plans if wind conditions are unsafe. Know before you go!

Estuary Tides: Noticeable mainstream currents can still exist with a strong outgoing tide, or a closed river mouth breaking open can flush out over 10 miles of backed up water. Conditions change in a dynamic environment. A lake like closed river mouth, or low Summer river flows, are only temporary.

Beach walker and "Paddler" deaths can happen at the river mouth and ocean beaches. River mouth currents easily sweep anything out into a deadly coastline with Sleeper Waves, Rip Currents, and an Undertow Trough. Do not approach or enter River Mouth Currents! Stay at least 150 feet back from protected wildlife resting, birthing, or feeding "at that location".  It's the law and it can save your life. You are not breaking any rules when wildlife follow you aroun in the water.

"Funding Cuts to staff State Park Lifeguards." ("Reduced beach staffing" First since 1969:) Our private lifeguards are not ocean rescue certified and focus on our own client 's safety first".

Our rescue staff manage risks by tracking forecasts, creating our micro-climate reports, opening during expected friendly conditions, and sharing the friendly ways to view prior to client launches. We close for actual rain, high temps below 55F, strong wind, or swift currents.  Please use our reports to plan your own trips with your own equipment. We are not onsite to assist when we are closed for challenging conditions.

Reading Peak Winds and Gusts: Example:

Winds from the NW up to 8MPH with gusts to 10 MPH = NW 8/10 (Nice Day)

All other wind directions, besides NW, are muted by local topography at the estuary.

NOAA Forecast: Jenner: Wind may be overstated

NOAA: Guerneville

NOAA: Monte Rio

April into May: Warming up. Track periods of wind.

Less rain gives coastal days often in the sunny 60s. "Variable Sun Days" can have tendrils of refreshing mist appearing and disappearing on a sunny day. Full sun days are also common. Wildlife love a dynamic environment.

Fog: Jenner is much less affected by true fog, that drops to ground level, than Bodega Bay or Fort Ross. Fog banks often just hang offshore here and there is usually not much each winter. Tule Fog: An inland valley phenomena leaving the coast warmer and clearer most morning. Overcast: Is higher and reduces sunlight. Variable overcast is common, with sun heating temps up mid-day. Ocean temps prevent mornings and evenings from dropping to cooler inland temps. Mornings and evenings can be lovely on the coast.

Track NW winds which blow out the estuary!  Strong winds can happen, yet the estuary is protected from most wind directions except for winds coming from the NW.  A short period of PM breeze is  common along with fully calm days.  However, strong wind can still happen. It's important to check "our" wind forecasts. Private Paddlers: Know before you go!

Note: We try to help with recreational safety by updating changing wind forecasts daily if needed.

Upstream of the estuary:  Can be windy even if calm in Jenner. This river twists and turns. Any wind effects some sections as wind blows upstream.  Don't get stuck trying to make it downstream. Reverse your route when river flows are low, (Mid-Summer into Mid Fall): " Start  Early" or plan to finish going upstream with the wind at your back. Reversing long routes to go upstream is often not possible during rainy months.
